Shadow boxes support person-centred care

Runnymede has begun an exciting four-year process to elevate the quality of its care delivery and earn designation as a Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO).

As part of this process, the hospital is taking steps to further place patients and families at the centre of their care. An early initiative supporting this is the use of shadow boxes, which are visual representations of each patient’s interests and values. An example is shown to the right - please click it to enlarge.

By enabling patients to showcase important personal items in a shadow box, the hospital helps them to communicate their uniqueness to staff. Shadow boxes are being rolled out on the 2nd floor and there are already several completed boxes at patients’ bedsides.

Sharing information through shadow boxes will promote a more personalized experience at Runnymede and enhance person- and family-centred care.
