Jean Train
Patient Profile
At nearly 90 years old, Jean’s journey to Runnymede Healthcare Centre began with a series of unexpected challenges that tested her fortitude.
Jean, a former teacher and veteran of the reserves, had an active and fulfilling life filled with curling, golf, and engaging conversations with her close-knit circle of friends. However, her life took a sudden turn after a fall in her home following a trip to visit family for Thanksgiving. The fall left her with severe pain and mobility issues. Initially reluctant to seek medical attention, she later found herself in hospital where she was treated for an infection and assessed for rehabilitation. It was then that she was transferred to Runnymede.
Reflecting on her arrival at Runnymede on Halloween, Jean describes the care she received as life-changing. “The therapy here is wonderful,” she says. “Every day, I felt myself improving.” Through consistent physiotherapy and the encouragement of a dedicated team, Jean regained her strength and independence. A particularly proud moment came just a day before her discharge when she received a green sticker, signifying her ability to move independently without supervision. “I called my sister right away,” Jean beams. “It felt like a graduation.”
As Jean prepares to return to her home, she looks forward to resuming her daily walks, reconnecting with friends, and reclaiming her active lifestyle. Her advice to others coming to Runnymede? “Listen to the doctors, do your exercises, and drink your water—even if you spill a little!” she says with a smile.
Jean’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the transformative impact of comprehensive care. With her vibrant spirit and newfound strength, Jean is ready to step confidently into the next chapter of her life.
