Runnymede celebrated 30 years of Black History Month in Canada. This year’s theme is “Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations – From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries”. Our Interim CFO, Winsome Lewis, delivered an exceptional speech detailing her journey of resilience, vision, and inner strength, which was followed by a grab-and-go lunch for all staff.
Winsome quoted her grandmother’s words, “No one can make you feel inferior without your permission,” as guiding lights throughout her journey as an immigrant. She explained that though she celebrates Black excellence every day, “Black History Month is a time to honour the legacy of those who came before us — including the giants in our own families, like my grandmother.“
To close, she encouraged all our staff with these words from her favourite movie, “If you want to own your power, you must first believe you have it.”
As Black History Month comes to a close, we hope to carry its lessons forward- honoring the past, celebrating the present and committing to a future where Black voices, stories and brilliance are recognized every day.
