According to the requirements of the Toronto Fire Services (TFS) clearing the room of origin in the case of a fire emergency should take a maximum of 4 minutes and 15 seconds, based on the rating of the door of the room. During the recent 2025 Mock Code Red/Green Fire exercise held at Runnymede Healthcare Centre, the drill team cleared out the room in 1 minute 13 seconds.

On November 25, 2025, Runnymede Healthcare Centre conducted a comprehensive Mock Code Red/Code Green exercise simulating a fire emergency and horizontal evacuation, with TFS onsite to observe and evaluate the response. The drill involved 22 staff volunteers acting as patients, 10 staff responders, and coordinated participation from multiple departments and units. The horizontal evacuation was conducted on the 4th Floor, with strict adherence to isolation precautions protocols

Outcome & Benefits of the Exercise

Based on feedback from TFS, the exercise was highly successful, and Runnymede passed all required performance criteria.

“Conducting this mock Code Red/Code Green drill provided significant organizational benefits, including strengthening staff preparedness and confidence in managing real fire emergencies while ensuring that Runnymede’s fire safety and horizontal evacuation procedures are in alignment with regulatory and accreditation standards.”Shakil Ahmad, Director Quality, Risk, Patient Relations & Occupational Health
