Patient Profile

Reverend Dr. Gladys Ijeh was admitted to Runnymede Healthcare Centre from Humber River Hospital. When she arrived, Gladys was bedridden and unable to walk.

Gladys’s outlook was grim, but her transfer to Runnymede, combined with encouragement from her chaplain, reignited her drive for recovery. “I was very excited by the idea of this place,” she said. “Other people I would speak to would say how lucky I was to be coming here and I was determined to get better.”

Six months after her initial hospitalization, Gladys began her journey at Runnymede. She was supported by a dedicated team of nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, and doctors who made her feel at ease and played a crucial role in her rehabilitation. They helped her with her medical needs and provided emotional support during difficult moments.

The encouragement gave Gladys the confidence to push herself during physical therapy, which had a huge impact on her recovery, and Gladys gradually regained her mobility. She now walks with the assistance of a walker, allowing for greater independence. “I can now go to the bathroom by myself without having to feel like I’m a burden to anyone.”

Gladys was eventually discharged and was looking forward to spending time with her nephew, Peter, who had been a constant source of support throughout her journey.  She is hopeful about her future and grateful for her time at Runnymede, particularly the attention and care she was given. “Everyone was so attentive; if I wanted anything, be it an extra apple or yogurt, I had it; I felt as though if I asked for gold, they would’ve given me gold.”
